微軟公司（Microsoft）認為，蘋果免費提供軟體沒什麼好怕的，和Office競爭的iWork 套裝軟體只是「小咖」，「不曾發揮多大的影響力」。

蘋果22日發布新款iPad，並宣布包括iWork在內的大部分軟體和升級版軟體免費。

微軟副總裁蕭氏（Frank Shaw）在公司部落格上評論說：「因為iWork未曾發揮很大的影響力，訂價方面的決定似乎也是後來才決定更改的，所以不是什麼意外或驚人的做法。」

至於微軟一年前推出的平板Surface在市場起不了什麼作用，蕭氏為Surface辯護說：「Surface和Surface2均載入免費的Office這全世界最普及、最強大的生產力軟體，而且價格比iPad 2和iPad Air都便宜。」他強調，Surface是「全球市售平板中最能提供生產力的平板」，因為有Office套裝軟體、還有「更精準」的鍵盤和觸控板，並且提供同步使用應用程式（APP）和編輯文件的功能。
